　The 63rd　Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand (JSSH) will be held in TOKI MESSE Niigata Convention Center on April 23rd and April 24th, 2020. I’m greatly pleased and honored to convene this annual meeting.
　In Japan, the first foundation of Hand Surgery was laid by Dr. Tajima, professor emeritus at Niigata University, who introduced Hand Surgery from United States of America to Japan and Dr. Tsuge, professor emeritus at Hiroshima University. JSSH has been evolving from the days of the greatest two doctor. The main theme of this meeting is “Lesen, Denken, und Arbeiten” in German. This phrase was once given to the graduating students by Professor Tajima. I suppose the phrase means that hand surgeons should absorb and acquire the information from home and abroad, and make use of the acquirement in academic work and ordinary medical care.
　In this meeting we invite seven doctors from abroad, and program invited lecture about the current hot issue of the hand surgery. We will talk about the required knowledge and surgical techniques for the hand surgeons through the educational lecture of Japanese doctors. And we program the special lecture by the both handless poet and artist, Mr. Katsuhiko Oono who is the curator of the Kaze-no-Oka museum.
　Unfortunately, the community perception of Hand Surgery is not high in Japan. What hand surgeons should aim for is to contribute toward society. And it is important to look into whether current treatments for the hand are correct and make the contribution for patients. In this meeting we want to verify and check on the adequacy of the actual surgeries for the hand. The new techniques of the hand surgery will evolve from the freewheeling thinking of the young doctors, but the idea must be from the basic research and the right education. Niigata Hand Surgery Foundation has been educating young hand surgeons, going beyond the borders of the universities. We will make this meeting an opportunity to examine the acknowledgement and practice for the specialist of hand surgery. I look forward to seeing more member of you at Niigata City.
